There was plenty of drama in the Premier Division Cup and competition favourites Rhydymwyn crashed out 6-3 in quite a one sided affair against Chirk AAA’s. Paul Edwards opened up Chirk’s account from the penalty spot following a foul on Joe Roberts. The hots were quick to get back on level terms when Darren Hignett impeded Stuart Hayes and although Chirk keeper Ashley Roberts blocked the penalty kick from Hayes, Chris Guy was first to react and equalise from the rebound. Chirk responded immediately and Jamie Rogers fired Chirk ahead when he raced onto an Edwards through ball to make it 2-1 at the interval.
Joe Roberts, who is looking back to his best, put Chirk further ahead in the first minute of the second period when he slotted home from close range. Rogers scored his second minutes later and when Stu Vernon completed a fine move involving Roberts and Rogers, Chirk found themselves 5-1 ahead on the hour mark. Rhyd pulled a goal back on 70 minutes through Lee Reynolds but Chirk again got back their four goal advantage when substitute Anthony Jones finished off a fine move with Nick Jones and Rogers playing their part. Joe Ouslem converted a late consolation for Rhyd with just minutes remaining to make the final score 3-6.
Cup holders Gresford Athletic booked a safe passage and never looked back or were threatened after Huw Jones thrashed home two goals from just inside the box. Gresford sat back and soaked up any Brickfield pressure and at the opposite end Owen Roberts threatened without finding the target.
The Brymbo clash with last seasons beaten finalists Corwen turned out to be quite an epic and despite Corwen twice taking the lead, Brymbo first clawed a way back through Steve Jones following some find build up play by Martin Jones. The game looked dead and buried and deep into stoppage time, Dion Jones was brought down and Rene Pinard converted the resulting penalty. It was a barren period of extra time but in the penalty shoot out that followed, Corwen kept their nerve and two penalty saves by Corwen keeper Nathan Aldridge proved criucial as Cowen went 4-3 on penalties.
Hawarden Rangers looked sheer class when dumping out Llangollen Town 4-0 and man of the moment Gary McConnell who is hitting a rich vane of scoring form came good again and after netting an opening half double salvi he went on to complete his hat-trick. Putting the tie to bed was Danny Sullivan.
Turning to the Premier Division, Venture lost ground in the title race when they were turned over 2-0 in their own back yard by Mold Alex.
Coedpoeth United ended a barren spell when they recaptured their form to produce one of the best results of the day to wallop FC Cefn 4-1. Due to the weather conditions the game was switched to New Broughton and in a wind assisted game it was Coedpoeth who had the advantage first half and went in at half time 1-0 up through John Griffiths. The visitors had Coedpoeth pegged in their own half and equalised through Lee Jones but they failed to show enough fight to go on and win the game enabling Coedpoeth to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Teenager Rhys Hughes is coming of age and he restored his sides lead and they finished in a canter with additional strikes from Nicky McCormack and Gary Roberts.
Johnstown Youth were back down in the doldrums once more and they were picked off by a spirited Overton display which saw them clinch an emphatic 5-1 victory at Moreton Playing Fields. They have struggled badly since losing leading scorer Richard Jones to Venture but they might well have found a solution in Rob Ward who ran their front line with the skills of a veteran performer. His man of the match display was rewarded with a four goal haul and completing their spree was Mark Astbury. Securing a lone consolation goal for the hosts was Scott Jones.
Llay Welfare might well argue they were worth a point when point from their clash with Penyffordd and when Eddie Maurice Jones pulled things back to 1-1 a point looked in sight but the visitors went on to snatch a second half winning goal.

Saltney Town made it four successive victories on the bounce at the expense of Garden Village and they did in convincing style to win 8-1 and keep their title dreams in tact. In appalling windy conditions, there were limited chances in the first half until Marc Williams broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time. Marc Gunther scored the first of his three goals within minutes pf the restart, midfielder Chris Woodward paved the way for Saltney’s third turned in by Shaun Hughes who was on target again soon after following a defensive gaffe. Ricky Wright scored from distance and with 10 minutes left, Gibbons claimed his hat-trick. Grabbing a lone consolation goal was Rob Ellington.
Argoed were taken to the wire by Penley who took an early lead through Aaron Jones and Aled Gardner but Marcus Davies and a goal in each half from Dave Catherall turned the tables for Argoed to win 3-2.
Chris Baker bagged all three goals for Acrefair Youth in their 3-1 victory over Hawkesbury Villa.
Castell Alun Colts got over last weeks disaster with a goal from James Gibney in the 1st minute, LEX straight after the restart but David Bullough hit an absolute screamer on 79 mins, Tom Crewe and Bullough again completed the scoring. Man of the Match on his first team debut was Lewis Clamp.
New Brighton looked threatening again as they walloped Glynceiriog 6-1. Their marksmen were hat-trick hero Steve Orsler, Paul Worral from the penalty spot, Lee Shearsmith and Lee Cousins.

Rhos Aelwyd were back to their best when sending Coedpoeth United crashing 5-0. Eryl Roberts and Darren Greenway bagged two goals apiece and youngster Dan Harrison made up their nap hand.
A solitary strike from Aaron Blackwell earned Cefn Druids a 1-0 victory at Ruthin Town.
In the quarter finals of the Reserves and Colts League Cup, Mold Alex are tipped to do well and they did not disappoint as they toppled Ruthin Town 2-1. Tom Upton broke the deadlock late in the game with a close range header, John Charles levelled but on the stroke of full time, Andy Probert notched a last gasp winner with quite a stunning shot.
Llangollen Town accounted for Garden Village, with ease, 3-0 in fact and on target were Gareth Mayberry, Will Humphreys and Gareth Mason.
Penyffordd pulled off a splendid 4-2 victory against Brymbo who replied through Rhys Roberts and Damian Jones but grabbing the winners goals were Gavin Mathias, Tom Hainsworth, Ashley Salisbury and Richard Jones.
